At my organisation, our vision is to be a trusted, forward-thinking leader in delivering high-performance solutions. But we know that innovation and operational excellence can only thrive in an environment where employee well-being is at the heart of our culture.

The upcoming ‘World No Tobacco Day’, observed on 31st May 2025, serves as an important reminder for Human Resources and business leaders across industries, especially manufacturing — that our responsibility extends beyond policies to the lived experiences of our people.

Tobacco use remains one of the most urgent public health issues of our time.

In India, it is both widespread and, in some contexts, culturally normalized. This makes it a uniquely complex challenge — particularly in manufacturing environments that rely heavily on physical stamina, mental alertness, and teamwork.

The impact of tobacco in the workplace is not limited to health risks alone. It leads to increased absenteeism, lower productivity, and safety hazards.

Smokers are more prone to fatigue, chronic respiratory issues, and cardiovascular strain—all of which diminish operational efficiency. The risks of second-hand smoke also compromise the health and morale of non-smoking colleagues, affecting the overall ecosystem of workplace wellness.

At my organisation, we believe that cultivating a safe and high-performing workplace means supporting every employee’s journey toward better health—without judgement. We maintain a strict tobacco-free workplace policy and embed wellness into every layer of our employee experience.

Policies alone aren’t enough to bring real change – true progress requires action and commitment.

Therefore we supplement policies with continuous awareness efforts, educational campaigns, and access to professional tobacco cessation support through Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs). We invest in training our managers and supervisors to recognize wellness challenges and respond with empathy. We encourage peer support circles, and we’ve seen how the right environment and encouragement can drive real, lasting change.

As HR professionals, we must move beyond a compliance mindset and become catalysts for cultural transformation. The goal is not just a tobacco-free workplace—but a thriving one.

This World No Tobacco Day, let's reaffirm our commitment to fostering healthier habits, safer workspaces, and a future where every employee has the tools and support to thrive —physically, mentally, and professionally.
