Reading books is addictive. I owe this to my school Principal Fr Pereira. He made reading library books compulsory - Monday to Monday. I am eternally grateful to him today.
From fairy tales and adventure to fiction and non-fiction, books open your heart and mind. They take you on unforgettable journeys - an armchair travelogue of life.
A wide range of authors, have shaped my understanding of human ethos, emotions and nature - Leon Uris, Charles Dickens, Shakespeare,S T Coleridge, D H Lawrence, Earnest Hemmingway, Guy de Maupassant, O'Henry, Alexander Dumas's famous The Count of Monte Cristo, a novel of love, betrayal, endurance, and ultimate justice, remains a masterpiece close to my heart. Today, I also find deep meaning in spiritual books by my Guru Dev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Ji.
Books weave a world of vivid imagination and intellectual discovery - a universe of endless possibilities. They come in as many forms as there are people on this planet.
Reading has impacted my life in tremendous ways. I always encouraged my students to read beyond their textbooks. So they could polish their imagination, strengthen their writing, and enrich their vocabulary. Reading sharpens the intellect and makes one more receptive to new ideas. It nurtures creativity and innovation.
Books guide you to be loving, compassionate and empathetic.
They are great friends and faithful companions - ones that don't betray, exploit or manipulate. They stand by us in moments of loneliness. While they cannot replace human connection, many self-help books can build confidence and inner strength. The wisdom found in our ancient scriptures - The Quran, The Bible, The Bhagavad Gita, The Guru Granth Sahib - offers guidance for life’s many questions.
I believe the ability to express oneself is a blessing. Through reading, we connect deeply with a writer’s perspective and in turn, find our own voice. For me, books have nurtured a love for language and expression. They have inspired me to write poems and articles, often extempore.
Reading has also led me to contribute to nearly forty anthologies on diverse themes - love, patriotism, sacrifice, parents, soldiers, doctors, and more. Seeing my words in print brings a deep sense of accomplishment - one that began with the simple habit of reading.
Books guide our mind, body, and soul. They elevate our purpose and keep us grounded.
Books are indeed:
A gift to humanity. A gift to our priceless planet.
